When rival ascetics failed to heal the king, Sambandar applied the sacred ash to the king's body while singing these eleven verses. The king was instantly cured.

The Jains, learning of this, attempted to harm the saint. In a turn of events, the king developed a severe and incurable fever. A challenge was set: the Jains would attempt to cure one half of the king's body, and Saint Sambandar the other. Applying the sacred ash ( Thiruneeru ) from the Madurai temple while singing the verses of this hymn, Sambandar instantly healed his half. Not only was the fever cured, but the king's hunched back was also straightened. The Jains failed, and the king returned to Shaivism. This legend is the reason why chanting this pathigam is believed to cure fever, pox, and other heat-related ailments.
