For those who may have missed it, Invincible Season 2 - Episode 5 picks up where the previous episode left off, with our protagonist, Mark Grayson, still reeling from the aftermath of the brutal battle against the superhero-turned-villain, Omni-Man. As Mark navigates his complicated relationships with his father, Nolan Grayson (aka Omni-Man), and his friends, Amber and Atom Eve, he must also confront the harsh realities of being a superhero.

The Sequids—parasitic, mind-controlling organisms—have taken over an entire Martian fleet, using the physical host body of astronaut Rus Livingston to coordinate their hive mind.

The episode opens in the immediate, bloody aftermath of the Viltrumite attack on the planet Thraxa. Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) has spent roughly two months healing and helping the rapidly aging Thraxan citizens rebuild their shattered civilization. Tortured by guilt over his father Nolan’s (J.K. Simmons) actions, Mark reluctantly agrees to return to Earth at the behest of Andressa.

If the first half of the episode was about rebuilding and responsibility, the second half was a masterful exercise in chaotic, high-stakes superhero storytelling. As creator Robert Kirkman explained, the goal was to explore a classic comic book trope: two major, unrelated disasters striking at the exact same time. Mark and the Guardians must split up to handle both crises, setting the stage for two parallel, heart-pounding action sequences. The episode picks up immediately after the mid-season

While Earth’s mightiest heroes are in space, a much more insidious threat emerges at home. The remixed Lizard League, supposedly C-list joke villains, attacks a military base housing nuclear missiles. This threat feels shockingly real and personal because it’s left to the "B-team": Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow), and Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin). What follows is one of the most brutal sequences in the show’s history. The League’s new leadership (a storyline previously only hinted at) transforms them into a terrifyingly effective force. Komodo Dragon brutally dispatches Dupli-Kate, smashing her original body into one of her clones. He then simply swallows Shrinking Rae while she’s in her miniature form; she attempts to expand to escape, but Komodo crushes her from the inside, leading to a moment of grim finality. Rex manages to kill the Komodo Dragon, but loses a hand in the process and is left at the mercy of the Lizard King, who puts a gun to his head. The episode then cuts to black on a literal cliffhanger, leaving his fate unknown.

Invincible Season 2, Episode 5, titled "We Need to Talk," marks a pivotal moment in the animated series based on Robert Kirkman's comic book series. This episode dives deep into the psyche of Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, as he grapples with the aftermath of his confrontation with the superhero killer, The Mauler. The episode's title itself serves as a metaphor for the conversations that need to be had, not just between characters, but within oneself.

The standout sequence of Episode 5 is the shocking violence at the nuclear silo. Invincible has always been known for its gore, but this sequence strips away the grand, operatic nature of Viltrumite clashes and replaces it with a desperate, grounded horror.

Mark Grayson faces impossible choices as the fallout from the Angstrom Levy assault spreads—friends, enemies and hidden agendas force him to reconsider what it means to protect Earth.
