This paper examines the role of the workbook ( Quaderno degli Esercizi ) within the widely adopted Italian language learning system, Nuovissimo Progetto Italiano 1 (NPI). While the student’s book often receives primary focus in pedagogical discussions, the workbook serves as the critical site for reinforcement, autonomous learning, and assessment. This study analyzes the structural design of the NPI workbook, evaluating its alignment with the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach. Specifically, it investigates the balance between mechanical drills and communicative tasks, the integration of multimedia resources, and the workbook's capacity to foster learner autonomy in the acquisition of Italian L2.
