Ben-Hur was a logistical and artistic triumph. To bring ancient Jerusalem and Rome to life, production designer William A. Horning and his team constructed the largest sets ever built for a film. The centerpiece was the Circus Maximus in Rome, built on an 18-acre lot at the Cinecittà Studios, employing 15,000 extras for the chariot race alone. The detail was staggering: a workshop of 200 artists produced thousands of statues and friezes, while costume designer Elizabeth Haffenden managed a staff of 100 wardrobe workers to create the thousands of period-accurate costumes.
